Almost everyone has heard the word “Botox”! But do we all know what it actually does?

Botulinum Toxin A is a drug that prevents muscle contraction temporarily when administered. It has been safely used since the 80’s for medical purposes and early 2000’s for cosmetic use. It is now considered one the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures to date.

The most common areas for anti-ageing purposes include, frown lines, smile lines and forehead lines. Other treated areas include bunny nose, DAO, chin dimpling, sad smile, gummy smile and lip flip. Tox is also effective when treating excessive underarm sweating, migraines and teeth grinding.

How long does it last ?

Results from SLA Tox at usually last three to four months in initial stages of treatment. However, over time you should need less treatments to maintain results if you are consistent and your overall skin health is optimal.

Is there any downtime ?

There is no typical downtime following SLA Tox almost all patients can resume their normal activities immediately. Small bumps following the injections will appear and usually disappear after 2-3 hours. The team at SLA Medical will provide post procedure information and outline the do’s and don’ts.

RULE 1 - IDENTIFY IF WE ARE TREATING FOR ANTI-AGEING?

IS THERE EYELID HOODING? YES – ANTIAGEING – Treat 2 areas = Frown and eyes are always treated as these are negative muscles causing depression or pull. This can give a slight brow lift and ensure you have no heaviness following the injection. YES – EYELID HOODING – you may be restricted to only TWO areas of TOX – frown and eyes – this will help heaviness in your eyelid area and help you feel more REFRESHED! NO – REJUVENATION – Treat 3 areas = You can usually treat the Frown, eyes and forehead as you should not be at risk of heaviness when treated correctly.

Rule 4 – Frequency – We must adhere to the licensed recommendations!

At SLA we are passionate about ensuring we get optimal results and educate our patients why it is imperative we treat at certain intervals. The licensed recommendations state the clinical result from toxin is present up to 12-16 weeks.
Due to this treating 3-4 monthly in the first year is recommended for optimal results. The second and subsequent years we advise if patients are using medical grade skincare they should be aiming for twice a year treatments.

RULE 5 – Protect your Investment – Always aim for 100% efficacy of your treatment!

SIDE EFFECTS & RISKS

All cosmetic procedures carry risks and side effects. Common temporary side effects usually lasting up to 3 days maximum, following your treatment with Botulinum Toxin are:

– Tenderness at the injection site
– Minor swelling at the injection site
– Bruising

Less frequent side effects are:

– Headache
– Flu like symptoms
– Temporary eye lid ptosis

TGA recommended dosages of Botulinum Toxin A for cosmetic procedures are deemed safe for administration and could not lead to poisoning.
